POEM: ISOLATION

By Elvis Dumle

Inspired by Sir. Jide Badmus

now, we can watch hours and days—
slide away softly,
hoping time would come good
as we lie low in fear under blankets
for the bitter weather to pass by.

now, we’ve found peace and contentment
in the ordinary things of a dry day—
learning how to listen more deeply
to the war dance of silence.

now, we dread sneezing and coughing
like terrorism—
finding safety behind face masks
while washing hands to keep death at bay.

now, as we wait and pray for this danger to pass;
let’s reflect and dream new images.
as we grieve our losses and suffer this strange pain
let’s with profound resilience gather in faith
to fight this pandemic in isolation.
